US Left Behind More than $7 Billion of Military Equipment for Taliban

Jonathon Turley

The Defense Department Inspector General has released its long-awaited report on what the Biden Administration left behind in Afghanistan. It is an unbelievable list of equipment left to one of the most violent groups in the world with a history of supporting terrorist organizations. I opposed the long war in Afghanistan, so I was not among those critical of Trump or Biden in pushing to leave the conflict. However, no one has ever explained why the Biden Administration left this equipment in Afghanistan as opposed to removing it or destroying it.

While the collapse of the Afghan government was rapid in the final days, the government had many months to prepare for the scheduled withdrawal. Yet, it took no steps to remove or destroy this equipment. Instead, it elected to leave this arsenal intact to the Taliban.

The ground vehicle inventory alone was worth about $4.12 billion. In addition, the U.S. military lost $923.3 million worth of military aircraft and $294.6 million in aircraft munitions.

The Taliban was instantly made one of the best equipped militaries in the world due to this windfall gift by the Biden Administration.

While the report says that “some” of the aircraft were “demilitarized and rendered inoperable during the evacuation,” most of this equipment was left read to use, including 316,260 small arms, including sniper rifles, machine guns and grenade launchers that were worth $511.8 million.

I do not understand how this clear and unimaginable blunder has gone unaddressed. No one was fired. There is not even any evidence of discipline of any kind. The Biden Administration decided to give the Taliban billions in weapons rather than destroy them. Yet, there seems little more than a shrug and a yawn from Congress and the press.

  1. But I am sure that the citizens of Afghanistan would dearly love to have what is actually due them in the form of their funds that’s being held back from them in the form of sanctions. Those people are owed over $7 billion and yet they are facing starvation and other poverty related issues. They cannot eat that military equipment.

One Year After Taliban Takeover, US Refuses to Release Afghan Funds
Afghans are facing a dire humanitarian crisis as the US maintains sanctions on the country

Monday marked one year since the Taliban entered Kabul and the now defunct US-backed Afghan government officially collapsed. There has been drastically less violence in the country since the US troops left, but Afghans are now facing a dire humanitarian crisis that is being exacerbated by US sanctions and Washington’s seizure of Afghan central bank funds.

While the citizens of the U.S. are busily murdering each other, not one is out screeching and shouting about the billions of our tax dollars sitting over in Afghanistan while millions are facing homelessness and hunger due to skyrocketing housing and food costs in this collapsing third world shithole. Like I stated in a comment on another post, this is insanity!

    • Clearly the US needs to be taken to a war crimes tribunal over Afghanistan, Shelby. I suspect it will happen sooner rather than later. The US dollar seems on track to collapse within the next year or so, as China, Russia et al reshape the world economy with other reserve currencies.

  3. Little more than a shrug and a yawn from Congress and the press?

How can so many people be so corrupt? Surely, a vast number of people must be in the know about all this. And nobody dares to object? Why not? I cannot understand this kind of human behavior.

  4. I would estimate the number of people who know about this as under 500, Aunty. Congress won’t do anything because nearly all people who get elected to the House and Senate are subject to various kinds of blackmail if they challenge “official” corruption: https://trineday.myshopify.com/products/one-nation-under-blackmail And the media is so heavily infiltrated by the CIA (the CIA started the war in Afghanistan) that any reporter who tried to report on this would lose their job.
