Film Review
The final episode in Adam Curtis’ I Can’t Get You Out of My Mind series focuses on complexity theory. According to the theory, because human beings are part of a complicated system they can never totally understand, our conscious thoughts have nothing to do with our actions. Therefore, it concludes, social activists have no hope of ending corruption and human suffering in modern day society.
Until the total commercialization of the Internet that occurred after 2010, Silicon Valley icons believed the Internet could be used for social change. This by enabling large groups of people to share information outside the control of corporate and political elites.
Curtis covers the 1999 rise of Putin, who Curtis describes as the ultimate technocrat who believes in nothing. The film portrays all Putin’s political decisions as tactical moves, devoid of any ultimate objective. Throughout his career he has cynically played off popular anger against the oligarchs. When this fails he plays the populist/nationalist card and to appeal to Russia’s glorious history and its (alleged) role as the last defense against a corrupt West.
Other key events Curtis covers in Part 6 include
- The 2001 dotcom crash, which he blames on private banks lavishing money on essentially worthless dotcom companies to drive up their share prices.
- The CIA torture (at Guantanamo) of former Mujaheddin* operative Abu Zubaydah, who was kidnapped in Pakistan in 2002 despite discontinuing his paramilitary (“terrorist”) activities in 1992 following a severe head injury.
- The rise of Dominic Cummings within Britain’s Brexit movement. Cummings believes computers allow us to to use complexity theory to understand the unelected global elite behind globalization and to take back power from them.
- The rise of corruption in China, in part due to collusion between party and government officials and criminal gangs. According to Curtis, the main purpose of Xi Jinping’s Social Credit policy is to suppress growing popular anger against government corruption.**
- The role of artificial intelligence (ie allowing computers to write their own algorithms by feeding them massive data) in disastrous decisions (by the financial sector and their regulators) in triggering the 2008 global economic crash.
- The Russiagate and Qanon conspiracies that dominated media and social media during Trump’s presidency
*The CIA secretly trained, armed and funded the Mujahaddin (under the leadership of Osama bin Laden) in their fight against Soviet occupation of Afghanistan (1979-1989).
**Social Credit uses a massive public surveillance system to monitor the activities and social interactions with every resident and reward them for “acceptable” behavior with financial benefits and other perks.

Haha, that is funny but oddly true too!
Again thank you for the good information and update but it is sad how as I see it, the human race is likened to the epitome of the guy who fell into a ditch and the only help that came along was someone tossing him a shovel and telling him to just start digging and see where you end up!
Of course people in ancient times thought along these lines in the Good Book.

Put into context; “14Behold, the wicked man travails with evil; he conceives trouble and births falsehood. 15He has dug a hole and hollowed it out; he has fallen into a pit of his own making. 16His trouble recoils on himself, and his violence falls on his own head.…” I sure see Biden in this way!
Now that is how I see many of these world stage players; right now! If not this literally happening to them they certainly ultimately bring upon themselves; their own doom one way or another in the end!

I just noticed your other question here about why the wicked men wind up in control. Why did the Germans allow Adolph Hitler to do what he did? Or like I said why did American’s allow a fraud and madman to be installed not properly vetted and elected; as the Commander in Chief? To me it’s just like the criminal that sits around in any spare time, or while in prison; coming up with better ways to beat the system or take advantage, so eventually the bad guys pull the wool over everyone’s eyes because decent people aren’t like that, they work hard and aren’t trying to take advantage; and like to spend their spare time with family or doing some nurturing activity for themselves or others!
It’s like the Devil; which I actually believe is real, who has been coming up with all the angles and schemes conceivable under the sun or in hell for that matter! The old saying about having “plenty of tricks up his sleeve!”
Let’s include what I said in you other Blog Post about how dire things are as I see it. These statements are just as applicable here as there I figure.
Hi Jeanne and I’m sure my outlook sounds nearly hopeless but my middle name over the years should have been hope the way I would always see the bright side of things! That changed drastically over the last 15 years after seeing 911 as just a precursor or portend of worse things to come, as they did in my own personal life; and all due to people. I no longer have any of that confidence in human beings that I always did!
Mind you I still see so much good and even greatness in a few here and there, as well as even a sweet beauty in some who actually have genuine humanity dwelling in their hearts! My God, look at innocent little babies and be amazed at the precious beauty and innocence so vibrant and new, not yet christened by the mean world and harsh realities of human failure!
The future is bleak; I’m not imagining that and just by what we see happening over even that last couple of decades I see no way that the human race won’t derail itself as evil has grown exponentially and with the advent of AI and Digital Data Transference out pacing the human moral and ethical maturity it will only be a matter of time before things get way out of control, and in a sense they already have! Stop and think about how diabolical humans have become to allow full term day of delivery abortion and those aborted babies are being harvested in many instances for profit and wild scientific experimentation for very sinister selfish purposes! Some of the young women having abortions actually have a Happy Abortion Party afterward celebrating their freedom to do it and I guess make the statement they are in control of their own bodies! Oh really, and when they get pregnant obviously not wanting a child they just had a convenient momentary lapse in that control of their own bodies and reproductive organs; is that it? This is all as I see it extremely diabolical and like the canary in the mine shaft. Where is the moral integrity in such people? I say they have none and think about this issue on an exponential level as to what sort of people will exist down the road with all of the propaganda and rewriting of history and woke mentality with cancel culture and other such nonsense running rampant; producing some of the most confused and weird people I’ve ever seen since my boyhood days; and is it any wonder when they grow up in this train wreck!
Then picture such people in powerful positions say even a global leader with buttons for nuclear weapons at their fingertips or worse biological scourges than any little old Covid-19; that is weaponized to take out certain groups of people with certain genetic characteristics, so a selective kill if you will. Are we to believe that looking say at Xi Jinping and the CCP or even Biden, that they are all heart and with the enormous power they have at their disposal they will be ever so mindful not to cause harm in the world? While knowing that Xi and his regime took out 1.2 million Tibetans, another selective kill if you will or what’s otherwise known as genocide; as of 2016! Or this whole Hoax Covid-19 Plan-demic!
No as I see it man’s technological capabilities far outgrew his benevolence and genuine humanity, meaning that humans will use power and new technologies for ulterior and nefarious designs exceedingly well and it’s not going to be a “Salvation Army” mindset ruling the world by these people coming up in the near future! Just look at what the people along with the “propaganda machine” Installed as an American POTUS, the 48 year career professional politician (Government Sanctioned) organized crime syndicate racketeer Scranton Joe; to run the most powerful country on the planet who in less than his first two months in office signed at least 50 executive orders, which obviously means if he and others in charge are in that much of a hurry to radically alter the landscape; it can’t be good! All caution has been chucked to the wind and petal to the metal, no holds barred; raging slam bam thank you ma’am mindsets are in play! We all know the adage “haste makes waste” and moms always told us “don’t be in such a hurry or you may have an accident or something!”
