What are They Hiding? Human Rights Groups Blocked from Monitoring Julian Assange Trial

Fair trial monitors are a critical component to upholding transparency and regulation in courtrooms across the world, reminding authorities that independent witnesses are scrutinizing them. Amnesty International monitors have been recognized as international fair trial monitors for cases in many repressive states, including Bahrain and Turkey, and even oversaw cases at Guantanamo Bay. It is a disgrace that the UK has failed to recognize that international fair trial monitors should be officially recognized and permitted access to the Assange hearings.

The high profile extradition hearing of publisher and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange continued in Central London today. But it did so without oversight from international human rights groups.

Julia Hall, an expert on criminal justice and human rights for Amnesty International, revealed that her organization was again denied entry to the court today, despite their repeated requests to be recognized as fair trial monitors.

  2. The Human Rights group are being denied access to the court proceedings precisely because it is not a fair trial, the charges being brought against him are egregious at best. In truth, this trial is in itself a total disgrace and is intended to ensure that dishonest regimes like those of the US and Britain, who commit war crimes and violations of International Law as well as atrocities in violation of Human Rights are never exposed. It’s no more than you would expect from Third world regimes except for the fact that Britain and the US advocate their superiority in terms of being “civilised” but are lagging seriously behind much of the rest of the world. Hubris and self delusion play a role in this failure to move with the times and thus leaves them open to mockery. Robbie Burns made such thinking clear: “Oh for the gift that God did ge’ us, to see ourselves as others see us” and Jesus also stated the obvious, remove the log in your own eye before commenting on the splinter in someone else’s.
The self absorbed and deluded western “civilised” countries just haven’t caught on to the fact that so much of the rest of the world is way ahead in terms of “Law and the People” leaving countries like the US and Britain despised and held in contempt.and a bit of a joke. Britain is looking more like a doddery and senile old grandma living in her past and unable to see the consequences of her sad reminisces of grandeur, she might once have had.

    • Excellent observation, Mohandeer, especially your comments about the US/UK legal system. As I understand, most of Europe uses an “inquisatorial” as opposed to an “adversarial” legal system. In my view, the flaws of the adversarial system are the main reason so many men are acquitted of rape in the US and UK.
