The EPA also says the most consistent findings concerning PFOA and PFOS include higher cholesterol levels in exposed populations, and “reproductive and developmental, liver and kidney, and immunological effects in animals.” PFAS are also indicated in lower birth weights and immune system dysfunctions, though that data is limited. Specifically, the substances have been linked to testicular cancer, kidney cancer, ulcerative colitis, thyroid disease, and pre-eclampsia.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), PFAS is the umbrella category for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, including PFOA (perfluorooctanoate ammonium), PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate), and GenX, a trade name used by DuPont, and its spinoff company Chemours. GenX refers to their processing aid technology, which includes hexafluoropropylene oxide (HFPO) dimer acid and the ammonium salt HFPO dimer acid. Many of these chemicals, used in the manufacturing of non-stick cookware, fast food wrappers, and stain-resistant or water-resistant fabrics, never break down in the environment, according to the CDC, and accumulate in the body over time. Substances in these groups are aptly nicknamed “forever chemicals.”

  1. Yet another example of how bureaucrats act against both the purpose of their organization and the best interests of the public.

Hopefully, now that the truth is finally coming out, DuPont and the other makers of PFAS will be sued out of existence. Unfortunately, the court system works to protect powerful interests. So, I’ll be surprised if any law firm can win a class action which results in any meaningful rewards to the victims.

Also, the bureaucrats who covered up the dangers of PFAS should be fired and prosecuted, but that won’t happen because both the bureaucracy and the prosecuting princes are happy to protect powerful interests even when those interests are harming everyone including the families of the bureaucrats and prosecutors.

    • Thanks for commenting, Mark. Your statement about the courts protecting powerful interests is distressing, as prevailing against powerful interests in the legislative or executive branch is totally hopeless. Except here in New Zealand. Here in Taranaki, our last hope in prevailing against fpreogm gas and oil companies and their fracking projects is the Environment Court. It has taken about 5 years, but our group is prevailing with a positive interim ruling about separation distances for fracking wells and production stations.
