America’s Homeless Working Poor

The Working Poor and Homeless in the US

Four Corners (2017)

Film Review

This Australian documentary challenges whether job growth in the US (25 million new jobs in ten years) really represents economic recovery. The film makes three important points: 1) the vast majority of new American jobs are minimum wage part-time jobs, 2) well-paid middle class jobs continue to vanish, and 3) approximately one-half of US workers live in poverty.

The film follows three families. The first, in Orlando Florida, consists of a single mother of three who works 70 hours a week for Dunkin’ Donuts and MacDonald’s. Earning $8 an hour, she and her family live in a cheap motel because they can’t afford rent. She sleeps 1-2 hours a night, and her mother-in-law provides childcare while she works.

The second family is a couple with two children who live in a homeless camp in the parking lot of a Seattle church. The wife works full-time as a cashier at Seattle Center, and her husband takes temporary construction jobs when he can find them. Most of the camp residents are employed workers with kids.

The third individual is a middle aged machinist in Erie Pennsylvania who has been just been laid off from General Electric Transport after 13 years. The factory is moving to Fort Worth Texas. GE anticipates cutting wages in half because Texas in a non-union state. In addition to losing millions of industrial jobs when manufacturers moved overseas in the eighties and nineties, the US lost an additional five million industrial jobs in the last 15 years.

    • Sure there would be job growth, but minimum wage dead end jobs. God really needs to bless America. Stop the wars and other shit you have been creating over the decades.

Trump keeps saying that America is being used by the rest of the world, yet he has a crisis at the southern border, but sends troops to the Middle East to protect who or what?

National security is an issue at the border, send them there to protect Americans. All idiotic talk, lies, threats, and the poor pay for it.
Captain bone spurs and his rich cronies are living rich off the hog.

      Time for REAL change.

  3. Human Monkeys are a race of cowards! Dominated by psychopathic Mass murderers and Safdists.
Cowardly monkeys, that have no determination to save their children. No value to save their world. They wallow in the trappings of crass materialism and enable the deranged sadism, torture and psychopathic insanity of the Sick Plutocrats. The devils have destroyed, most things left of virtue and beauty in the world.

There will be a nuclear disaster in America soon. It is assured. It is assured by the chaotic-narcissism and hate that governs America now. It will happen soon. The nuclear disaster, will be covered-up. Another disaster will follow. The catastrophe will occur in the next 2-3 years or sooner.
The illness will precipitate a societal breakdown, as is occuring in Ukraine and Japan.

The decline and collapse will occur much more precipitously in America. America is in the the grip of a gross-simmering health crisis, from that already exists.

The monsterously irresponsible, Plutocratic-Kakiocracies in the west and, places like India or Korea will follow . Their Nuclear Death machines will explode from aging and negligence. The nuclear cataclysms and climate change are insuring the demise of the human monkeys in 5-8 years.

Chris Hedges sees the collapse coming, though not with as nuch acuity as Radionuclide Toxicologists and Dr. Busby

  4. The Diablo Canyon reactor is damaged from the earthquakes. The pollution burden is high enough, that if one or two reactors go off, it is over. It looks like that will happen very soon. Too bad.

I admire you idealism. Thanks Dr. Bramhall for all of your writings, your insights and your support
