Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc. is on the verge of launching what the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) says will be the world’s first commercial drone delivery service in Australia. 

Wing, a subsidiary of Alphabet has been testing its drone delivery service over Bonython, a suburb of Tuggeranong, a township in southern Canberra. The year-long trial, called Project Wing, wrapped up last week; now the company is planning for a commercial launch in June.

Wing says its drones will be able to deliver small items, such as food and medication, but residents of Canberra, where the program was tested and will soon be ready for commercial flight, are furious about drones buzzing above.

  1. easy enough to shoot down I suspect….I can’t see the carbon cost of delivery being any advantage over what we have now either, on that basis alone let alone the infringement of our rights to some peace and quiet they should be shot out of the skies

  2. boredom, and nothing more constructive, creative or better to do… and don’t forget, to keep the banking system functioning we have to have economic growth; so we have to have more excuses to keep sucking more out of the earth.. and hey, no worries there, our planet is infinite … isn’t it?

  3. They can spy. On ya while delivering plastic trash. It is also reminiscent of nuclear power. They will buzz drones, over cities and the countryside. When they crash and kill a family or cause a car pileup, Google is absolved from liability in the name of progress.
