The State Department will publish new rules this week to require most visitors and immigrants to the U.S. to divulge their recent social media histories, carrying out one of the key security enhancements from President Trump’s extreme vetting executive order.
Travelers would also be asked to list phone numbers, email addresses and international travel during the previous five years, and to detail any immigration problems they have had, whether with the U.S. or elsewhere. They also will be asked about potential family connections to terrorism.

The Most Revolutionary Act 
Yet another reason to get off social media. Many would have one less problem to worry about if they could simply tell customs that they have no social media accounts. But what I would like to know is that since social media accounts have been sold to so many corporations, why can’t the government get that information from those corporations AND from the NSA?
Secondly, I would no longer even be interested in touring the U.S. if I had to undergo what amounts to a gestapo like interrogation. “To hell with it!” is what I would say and take my money and spend it elsewhere.

Well, Shelby, obviously the government can get the information from the NSA with no difficulty. I suspect this is just more psychological intimidation, like the the long lines for iris scans, the microwave machines that photograph you naked and the demands you remove your belts and shoes. If people can be conditioned to accept such treatment, they can be conditioned to accept anything.
And you’re right – here in New Zealand and Australia there is less and less interest in visiting the US and more and more airlines are creating direct routes to Europe that bypass Los Angeles.

I agree with Shelby. This proposal would deter potential tourists from visiting our country.
I cannot see this proposal keeping us safe from terrorists entering the USA.
~ What would prevent a terrorist from creating a fake social media history?
~ When “asked about potential family connections to terrorism,” a terrorist, posing as a tourist, would be a fool to claim such relationships.

I want the NSA to know that I created a fake Facebook account over 3 years ago and by the time I finished answering all of Facebook’s questions delving into my so-called ‘personal information’, I no longer even knew who I was, I had told so many lies! I actually created the fake account just to make a point and then directly deleted it but it is still up, I am sure because when I tried to delete it, Facebook stated that the “account could not be deleted.”
