This whole dairy façade began upon the premise that we need calcium, which we do, and that we can only get it through dairy products, which is false. There are a number of vegetables that contain even more calcium than milk, including broccoli, kale, cabbage, and watercress, along with a variety of nuts and seeds.
Oh, good old dairy! I’m sure you remember being a kid and having your mother tell you, Drink your milk! You need it to grow and be strong! Or perhaps your mom was ahead of the curve and saw through the mass marketing campaign designed to convince us that we require milk to live a healthy life.
Got Milk?

Oh my God! Don’t mention milk! My mother, when I was growing up, used to get milk from the farmer who would bring us milk straight from his own unique brand and that was the most disgusting mess I’d ever tasted. Whatever kind of milk that was, it would overpower anything it was added to. We couldn’t even taste the cereal or the cream of wheat or anything over that nasty milk. We, surreptitiously, tried putting it in the dog’s bowl and he wouldn’t touch it, that’s how bad it was. My mother said that it was to “build us up!” How the hell big did we need to get? I mean, my sisters were scrawny, but still, that was torture and add in the cod’s liver oil and we were in for it. But I digress. I, thankfully, became lactose intolerant and that finished off milk products for me. And it begs the question that if milk is so good for us, then why are so many of us lactose intolerant?
When you think of what is given to cows, all that is secreted through their milk. Ugh! And Yuck!

Shelby, when I was in medical school, we were taught that the vast majority of African Americans are lactose intolerant. All black mothers should be warned about this, but they’re not. When I was practicing in the US, I can’t tell you how many black kids were sent to me for hyperactivity when their only problem was lactose intolerance. As soon as the milk was stopped, they were fine.
