Is this omega-rich food worth the risk?

Aquaculture is often celebrated as a sustainable solution to overfishing, but in reality, farmed salmon may be one of the most toxic foods in the world. As a result of overcrowding, disease, pollution and low quality fishmeal, the resulting salmon meat is often contaminated and can lack the valuable nutrients of wild-caught salmon.
Worldwide, due to growing awareness of the environmental and health impacts of red meat, people have begun to favour white meat and fish. As a result, the aquaculture industry is suffering from the growing pains of high demand, and subsequently has been accused of procedures seriously compromising fishmeat quality.

I guess the only way to know you are eating truly safe food is to grow your own (after first testing your soil for heavy metals) or from a farmer you know and trust. It seems stories like this are rapidly converting people to veganism – if only for health reasons.

Wish I could answer that Kenneth. I was spoiled living in Seattle – we could get them from Fisherman’s Wharf when the fishing boats came in.

What I find really sad, futuret, is that it was the global food trade that spread these pests to begin with. Ordinary people would have been far better off if we had stuck with our tried and true local food production systems.
