The Western media is portraying Myanmar’s recent elections as historic. One commentator described Myanmar as an “exuberant nation prepared for a new era of democracy and political freedom.” But one wonders what sort of democracy and political freedom can be borne of elections in which nearly a million voters were banned from casting their ballots and with the apparent victor already declaring herself above the law.

My humble apologies for being so blunt. I’m just trying to clarify where you’re coming from regarding the genocidal treatment of the Rohingya. Especially when you say “it’s much quieter now” – it honestly sounds like you’re supporting Myanmar’s ethnic cleansing policies – I’m glad to hear that you don’t.
The fact remains that a year after the election of Aung San Suu Kyi, the military brutalization of the Rohingya persists. That suggests me that Myanmar is still run by the military and she is merely a figurehead: http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/aung-san-suu-kyi-violence-rohingya-muslims-myanmar-failing-a7436121.html
