Recently 30,000 Argentinean doctors signed a petition requesting their government ban the use of Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide. The Fatal Soybean is a documentary about the large cluster of miscarriages, birth defects, cancer and autoimmune disease in villages adjacent to Argentina’s immense “soy desert.” The filmmakers interview local doctors, environmentalists and grassroots activists. They focus in on one particular activist group, the Ituzainga Mothers Club. These women mobilized after numerous family members died or developed chronic illness following repeated exposure to the herbicides and pesticides sprayed on soybean crops.
As depicted in the documentary, Silence of the Pandas, a massive swathe of Argentina’s natural forest and grassland has been cleared to plant Monsanto’s Roundup-ready soy. The latter is a genetically engineered plant specifically designed to withstand spraying with the Monsanto herbicide Roundup. Owing to the emergence of Roundup resistant super weeds, most farmers are spraying more and more frequently with heavier and heavier concentrations of herbicide.
One of the doctors interviewed talks about the recent Dutch ban on Roundup and GM soy imports. Prior to 2014, the Netherlands imported GM soy animal feed from Argentina to feed their 250,000 pigs. After Dutch farmers found 20-30% of their piglets were born dead or with birth defects, research revealed that GMO soy absorbs traces of Roundup from repeated spraying.

Cat’s out of the bag, once GMOs have been released into the environment and crossed with naturally occurring variants, it will likely be difficult to remove the genetic modification, ensuring that it’s creator will always have grounds for a lawsuit for patent infringement. Clever huh? You plant it, you grow it, you harvest it, …they own it.

GMOs will be a major problem in North and South America for decades to come. Fortunately, except for India, most of the rest of the world has rejected them.

Thanks for reblogging. I’m reading a great book about the Dutch East India Company and the English East India company and their treatment of the natives in the Indonesia Spice Islands. This type of barbarism seems to be fundamental to capitalism.

The sooner people stop Monsanto the better. I’m starting local with a local supermarket that coins it trying to use local produce where it can. Their called Booths!

Good for you. Locally we’re lobbying the New Plymouth District Council to quite spraying our streets with Roundup. I hate to think of all the children we’re exposing that way.

Indeed it’s been banned in France so I figure keep the pressure up and they’ll crack soon stating a rollercoaster. I decided on them as the are only in North England and still quite local but big at the same time but making an impact for the ethics (kinda laughable but they do try).

That’s one thing I like about living in New Zealand, Kenneth. Thus far GMO crops are still illegal here – even though all the supermarkets import processed food with GMO ingredients.
