It’s not enough to protest or dismantle corrupt systems of power. For real change to occur, you must be prepared to build new ones. How radical black farmers are laying the groundwork.

– In August, five young men showed up at Soul Fire Farm, a sustainable farm near Albany, New York, where I work as educator and food justice coordinator. It was the first day of a new restorative justice program, in partnership with the county’s Department of Law. The teens had been convicted of theft, and, as an alternative to incarceration, chose this opportunity to earn money to pay back their victims while gaining farm skills. They looked wary and unprepared, with gleaming sneakers and averted eyes.

“Without black farmers, there would have been no Freedom Summer.”

“I basically expected it to be like slavery, but it would be better than jail,” said a young man named Asan. “It was different though. We got paid and we got to bring food home. The farmers there are black like us, which I did not expect.

  1. Building new frameworks for society is where we should all be headed. I picture communities that advocate for their localized needs in a sustainable manner. The global trade that is heavily dependent on fossil fuels for transportation and shipping may need to be dismantled.

  2. Racial injustice my ass!
Keep blaming white people for the problems within the black community and you will have a war that you never imagined and will NOT win. When you blame a collective part of society for your woes, you better damn well realize that segment of society is going to label, blame, and collective your segment of society as a whole. Stop being an ignorant “useful idiot” with outlandish and false claims of racism while propping up the corrupt, abusive system – the f-king government and elistists that control us all; instead join together with the rest of us ordinary people (people of all colors, ethnicities, and financial situations) to fight the real controllers of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness! Including justice. It isn’t the white race that controls anyone. It’s a small group of extraordinarily wealthy and powerful men and women who control the entire planet! It has nothing to do with race or color. The agenda is to oppress and control us all. Fake racism is just a tool used as a means to an end.

I thought you were more awake than this.

What a piece of trash article! May God help you in the coming days as you ignorantly fight against your real allies and ignorantly worship those who are legitimately trying to destroy you!

    • ???? This article is about a radical restorative project. I honestly can’t see where they are blaming white people for the problems within the black community. Perhaps you could point out the specific sections you object to.

    • Agreed, Gerry. I think there might be some confusion here between institutional racism, which is largely orchestrated by the corporate elite both of you mention, and the racist beliefs of individuals. gb888 is right that blaming and judgmentalism is the wrong way to solve that problem (at least in my view).
